Clonmore 3-11
Leighlinbridge 0-7
Clonmore clinched their quarter-final spot by virtue of this easy victory over the Leighlin All Blacks on Saturday last in Grange. The contest was over as early as the eleventh minute when Willie Rooney scored Clonmore’s second goal to open up a six point lead. Full forward John McGrath had already posted 1-1 to a sole point by Des Shaw for Leighlin. With Peter Kiernan and Johnny Doyle giving them a decided pull at midfield, Clonmore pushed on to lead by 3-6 to 0-2 at the break.
There had been a good spread of scorers with Paul Byrne scoring the third goal and last year’s county minor Con Murphy getting the last set of points before the break. Leighlin’s second point came from Brian Kavanagh.
The second half was much more even with the teams sharing 10 points. Clonmore took their foot off the pedal but Leighlin must be commended for a more spirited effort in a match where there was nothing at stake for them. Eanna Ryan, the Kavanagh’s and Conor Nolan picked off some fine scores in reply to the Doyle’s, Murphy, McGrath and Kiernan for Clonmore. Clonmore had one more addition to their injury list when sub Jamie Doyle had to leave the field shortly after coming on.
Best for Clonmore were Wesley Byrne, John Kelly, John Connolly, Johnny Doyle, Ronan Doyle, Con Murphy, Willie Rooney and John McGrath.
For Leighlin John Monaghan, Emmet Moore, Brian Nolan, Johnny Kavanagh, Des Shaw and Brian Kavanagh offered most resistance.
