Cribben to take the chain today

Today will be a proud day for the Cllr John Cribben and his family when he takes the chain as Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council for the next 12 months. Cllr Cribben will take over as Cathaoirleach from Cllr Joe Mellett at the Mayo County Council’s AGM. Speaking to the Mayo Advertiser yesterday, Cribben said. “It’ll be a proud day for me, my family, and my supporters who have elected me to the council. I look forward to the year serving the people of Mayo to the best of my abilities locally, nationally and internationally.”

It’s Thursday afternoon, another paper almost published, and the eyes are getting heavy. The office is hot and stuffy, whispered conversations almost soothing. A little snooze would be nice but that’s not an option. At least not before 6pm when the home time bell chimes.

Is an apology enough? I don’t know. Only a person who was abused at the hands of the religious nuns, priests and brothers can answer that question. Would prosecutions help in the healing process? Yet another question I have no authority to answer.

The posters are up and the fight is on as the Local and European elections are only four weeks away now. Wednesday morning saw the lampposts and pillars of the towns, villages, and roads of Mayo covered in faces smiling at us asking for our number one and two, three and four, in whatever order we prefer.

Claremorris, Friday night, and Irish singing and dancing was alive. All that could be heard from the glamourous confines of the McWilliam Park Hotel was chattering and excited conversation which definitely wasn’t spoken in the English language, but which sounded vaguely familiar. From outside you would be forgiven for thinking we’d been transported to the Connemara Gaeltacht. But inside it was a different story altogether. The room was awash with glamour befitting any danceroom in the nation, and it was the pride that each and every person in attendance had for our Irish culture, that was felt immediately upon arrival.
