When I was quite young, before I had started school, I had a brief conversation with an older woman, the memory of which has remained with me ever since. She was a teacher of some sort, and the incident took place in what must have been a playschool, though as this was perhaps 60 years ago, when such things were hardly known, I cannot be sure.
What I do remember is that my mother had left me in this place while she had gone somewhere and I knew she would be back shortly Anyway, my memory has this woman seated across from me at a low table. And what she was doing, or trying to do, was to get me to address her by her first name. And I wouldn’t – I couldn’t – do it.

Working in partnership with Galway County Council, Irish Water is progressing with the delivery of a significant upgrade to the water supply in Doire Né, Casla. The delivery of this project will help to provide a safer and more secure water supply for local customers while also supporting future growth.
Works will involve the replacement of over 200m of old damaged water mains along the R343 between Casla and the Leitir Móir junction to provide a secure, safe and robust water supply. The project, which is being carried out by Farrans Construction under Irish Water’s national Leakage Reduction Programme, is scheduled to begin this week and is expected to be completed by June.

Volunteer Galway aims to develop a group of volunteers for the Human Library Project to act as ‘books’ that others can ‘borrow’ to ‘read’. While this may seem a little odd, the aim of this endeavour is to create safe dialogue in the community to challenge stereotypes and discrimination through personal conversation.

There are no dedicated eating disorder inpatient beds at the 20-bed Child and Adult Mental Health Service facility (CAMHS) in Galway despite a sharp increase having been recorded in hospital admissions for eating disorders in Ireland during the pandemic. There was a 66 per cent increase reported in 2020 compared to 2019, according to the Irish Medical Journal.
