On the back of a successful Tri Talking Sport Virtual Bike Week hosted in partnership with Galway City Council in September of 2020, which featured an online bike spin utilising the cycling platform Zwift, a weekly virtual cycle has been taking place on Monday nights ever since, hosted by Joanne Murphy of Tri Talking Sport and Oliver Harkin, Primed Coaching and PARC Tri Community.
The 60 minute social spins on the virtual cycling platform have grown in popularity over the intervening weeks and months with riders of all abilities from across Ireland and beyond joining the spin for a workout and some great fun, all from the comfort of their homes or indeed their self described ‘pain caves’.

It has been another hard week, it is fair to say. There are none who are immune from the worry of this pandemic and its consequences. There are probably none who fully understand the changing rules and regulations with their ever changing status.
What we do know that as humans, we are being asked to mimic the animals and creatures and to hibernate. To be honest, there is probably not a better time of the year for it. Bloated by the excesses of Christmas, confined by weather and woes, the days still not quite stretching to an appreciable extent, we find ourselves with all the raw materials for wintering.

I think it was Rahm Emanuel who said once that we should never let a serious crisis go to waste. And I agree with him. In every adversity, there is an opportunity. Lest this should sound exploitative, what he meant was that every crisis is an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before. And so it has panned out this year.
If you told every GAA or soccer coach in the country that before every training session, every parent would be logging on to testify that their child is symptom free, they would not have believed you. If you were told that we would be taking over the private hospitals, that the amount of traffic would reduce and that most of us could work just as productively from home, people would think you were crazy.

The creation of thirty new jobs in Galway by Enterprise Ireland Companies is a huge boost for the West of Ireland, according to Senator for Roscommon-Galway, Aisling Dolan who is Seanad Spokesperson for Further & Higher Education, Science, Innovation and Research.
The roles are being created in three Enterprise Ireland supported companies that are based in Galway. Palliare, a medical device company, has hired 10 new employees in recent months. Flexwork company, Ronspot, intends to have a total of 10 new employees on board by Spring 2021, and has hired five people since September. Ronspot is a technology company which enables the flexible workplace between office and home. Venari Medical filled three new positions in October and have plans to recruit up to 10 new employees in the coming months.

COPE Galway has extended its thanks to Galwegians near and far who have shown solidarity and support for local people in need this Christmas by taking part in the charity’s 10-day “Swim Where You Are” Christmas event, which ended yesterday. The charity, which was unable to hold its traditional Christmas Day swim at Blackrock this year due to Covid-19 restrictions, said it has been overwhelmed by the swim photos and messages of support sent in by well wishers.

A number of Social Welfare payment increases are set to take effect in January 2021 as part of measures introduced in Budget 2021.
Payments for qualified child dependants will increase by €5 for children aged 12 or over and €2 for children aged up to 12, meaning parents on weekly social welfare payments will see an increase in their weekly rate of payment. These increases will take effect at various dates in January depending on the weekly welfare payment that either parent is receiving. It is expected that this increase will benefit some 419,000 children at a cost of €59.2 million in 2021.
