A witness has told a jury that the man accused of a shooting in Galway city earlier this year arrived at the witness’s house that same night asking him to mind a backpack containing a “sawn-off shotgun”, to burn a car used in the incident, and to act as an alibi.

A young rugby player, who had been driving his motorbike dangerously while drunk, dragged a Garda officer at least 20 metres before he stopped, the Galway District Court heard this week.
Keith Richardson (22) with an address at 295 Corrib Park, Newcastle, had pleaded guilty at an earlier court sitting to obstruction of a Garda officer, drink driving, dangerous driving, driving without a licence or insurance, and failure to produce insurance on May 13, 2008, at Eglinton Street.

Members of the Irish Nurses Organisation at Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe held a lunchtime protest outside the facility on Tuesday over what the union claims is the “wrongful suspension” of two long serving senior nurse managers.
The union says the demonstration, which took place during members’ lunch times and did not affect patient care, is the first step in its industrial action campaign, which began on Monday.
