It is a fact that when few people had a job in Galway the late Christopher (Christy) Dooley of Renmore Park, had many. They were all of an amazing variety. One of them was a factory on the Mervue Industrial estate where he made parts for German railway engines. He had a specialised scrap business in Munster Avenue, the site of the old family forge, where he recycled aeroplane parts and exported them to Spain.

Plans for a new Galway Garda HQ go on public display

Plans for a new Garda divisional and regional headquarters for Galway on a site in Murrough on the Dublin Road in Renmore have been announced by the OPW.

The proposal by the OPW is for the demolition of the single-storey building on the site and construction of a new 8,000 square metre, four/five-storey building. It will be built on a two acre site with potential room for expansion. The station will work closely with the new Garda station at Oranmore.

Galway school absenteeism over eighteen per cent

More than 18 per cent of Galway students are absent from school 20 days or more per year, according to a report released by the National Education Welfare Board.

The report shows that the average student nationally misses 12 primary school days and 13 post-primary school days a year and that the figures for non-attendance has remained the same over the last five-year period.

Fianna Fáil councillors were left isolated at Monday’s city council meeting when even their pact colleagues deserted them to support a motion condemning the Government’s handling of the economy.

Independent councillor Catherine Connolly proposed a motion of no confidence in the Fianna Fail/Green Party/Independent Government, condemning it for “the drastic consequences which the cuts in local authority funding are having on the provisions of services/housing at local level”.

Jobs boost as gaming giant announces 200 posts for city

There was welcome news on the jobs front yesterday with the announcement that leading American entertainment software company, Electronic Arts (EA), is to locate its European customer service and operations centre in Galway city, a move that is expected to create 200 jobs.

Electronic Arts Inc, which is headquartered in Redwood City, California, is already actively recruiting staff and searching for a suitable location in the city for its BioWare™ studio centre. It is believed that the new centre in Galway will be up and running early next year.

Before he gets to scribble his name onto the scroll of those who have been granted the Freedom of Galway city, he’ll be made to blush a few times. He’ll hear again how his dream secured the Volvo Ocean Race for Galway, not once but twice. How he beat the odds and defied the doubters, how he managed to make the city the envy of the rest of the country’s sailing ports. John is a jolly man, whose demeanour and personality allows him to make friends and to listen to his argument. And he has used this to great effect to achieve what he has achieved in his own life, in business and in sailing.
