Lyons condemns mysterious felling of trees in Lough Rusheen Park

Almost 40 trees have been cut down across a 35 yard stretch of Lough Rusheen Park - the third such incident of the unauthorised felling of trees in public areas of Salthill/Knocknacarra over the last five months.

A total of 37 trees were cut down in the park, an action which has been condemned by Independent city councillor Donal Lyons. He is calling on anyone with information on this incident to contact the gardaí and Galway City Council.

“A lot of people use the park for recreation,” he said, “and it is deeply frustrating that after so much time and effort was put into its creation, that this has happened, and that trees have been cut down for no apparent reason.”

The Lough Rusheen Park incident follows the felling of mature trees in Salthill Park in October, and the felling of between 10 to 12 trees in the Dr Mannix Road area. In all three cases the felling of the trees was either illegal or took place without any authorisation from the Galway City Council.
