Every primary school in Galway East set to receive €5,500 grant

Every primary school in Galway East is set to receive a minimum grant of €5,500 under the Department of Education’s Minor Works programme. The schools will receive the grants in early December.

Under the Minor Works programme, each school will also receive a top-up of €18.50 for each pupil in a mainstream classroom, and €74 for every child attending a special school or special class.

While schools have discretion on how to use the grants for small scale works on buildings and facilities, the Department of Education has offered a number of options on how to put the money to good use, such as improving the physical infrastructure of the school; upgrading or replacing mechanical and electrical services, such as heating or lighting and buying standard furniture; physical education equipment; new floor coverings; window blinds or IT-related equipment.

The grants have been welcomed by Galway East TD and Minister for Rural Affairs Seán Canney, who said: “I very much welcome this investment in Primary Schools that delivers on commitments given under Project Ireland 2040.”
