Free day out for everybody at the 50 Plus Show

Lifestyle event for retired and older people, the 50 Plus Show, returns to The Galmont Hotel in Galway on September 3/4.

Organisers are promising "a great day out, with something for everybody", no matter what age. Visitors do not have to be over 50 and everybody is welcome, regardless of age.

The free admission event will feature well known consumer affairs broadcaster Conor Pope, who will advise visitors how to spend less and "save themselves from the scourge of shocking customer service". Pope will also reveal many tricks of the trade supermarkets employ to entice customers to spend more than they intend.

Visitors will also be able to avail of free health checks and screenings from the Galway Clinic, Bonavox and Specsavers. These will include blood pressure monitoring, vision and hearing screenings.

Mary O’Rourke, who wrote the best-selling autobiography There is something about Mary, will talk about her life in politics and her recent successes as an author.

International coin, medal and stamp expert Mike Kelly will be on hand to value items, as well as banknotes. Kelly, who has written a best-selling book on these disciplines, will offer free valuations. Kelly says the last time he did valuations in Galway, one visitor brought in stamps valued at €5,000.

Other attractions will be free arts and crafts workshops, bridge workshops, and cookery demonstrations from JP McMahon and Kate Wright.

The event, which has been running in Ireland for more than 20 years, also features a mix of displays, presentations and demonstrations, covering many of the interests and concerns of the over 50s, such as rights and entitlements, finance, health, travel, fashions, homes and gardens, and security.

Travel

Because most older people have the time and the resources to take a number of breaks throughout the year, the event will feature hotels and hotel groups from all over Ireland, offering special breaks, as well as information on foreign vacations specially designed for seniors.

Family history

Genealogy will be a feature of the event with experts on hand to assist in tracing your family history.

The 50s Plus Expo takes place from 10am until 4pm on both days. Admission is free. For further information you can contact the organisers S&L Promotions Ltd at 003531 4969028. Or email: [email protected]. Alternatively, visit www.seniortimes.ie
