Galway-native senator urges graduate diaspora to register for Seanad elections

Galway-native but US-based senator Billy Lawless has this week urged graduate members of the Irish diaspora to avail of their rights to vote in any future Seanad elections.

“As many of you know, I have focused a lot of my efforts in Seanad Eireann on inclusion of the Irish Diaspora in the affairs of Ireland. So, I want to highlight an important way for many of our men and women living abroad to exercise their democratic right to vote in the upcoming Seanad elections,” he said, reminding graduates that they are the only Irish citizens living outside the State that have a vote.

The deadline to register to vote in the Seanad Éireann elections is on Tuesday February 26 2019. All Irish citizens living in Ireland or abroad who are graduates of a National University of Ireland institute (UCD, UCC, NUI Galway, NUI Maynooth, Royal College of Surgeons and NCAD ) or Trinity College Dublin are eligible to claim their vote.

The registration process is very simple and straightforward. Go to http://www.nui.ie/elections/seanad-register.asp to download and complete the registration form.

It must be signed and a scanned copy sent to [email protected] before February 26. For TCD graduates, the registration form can be downloaded from http://www.tcd.ie/.

“Please share this information with your networks to ensure that Ireland’s cherished emigrants have their voices heard. Remember, you are the only citizens living outside the State that have a vote. Use your constitutional right to vote and ensure that you register,” he concluded.
