CELLISSIMO, GALWAY'S new triennial festival celebrating the cello - the instrument some believe most resembles the human voice - takes place in 2020, but ahead of that comes a fundraising gala for the festival itself.

Whether in classical music, be it Bach's six Suites for Cello, Kodály's Sonata for Solo Cello, or Britten's three Cello Suites, or in rock, as as on the Pixie's 'Monkey Gone To Heaven' or Nirvana's Unplugged In NY album, the cello has found an important and enduring place, so a festival celebrating this most versatile of instruments makes sense.

Cellissimo, Music for Galway’s flagship project for Galway 2020, runs from April 25 to May 3. The fundraising gala is on Friday March 1 2019 from 6.30pm in the Hotel Meyrick, and features a champagne reception, four course dinner, a performance by members of Cello Ireland, and the presentation of the inaugural Laochra Ceoil Cellissimo Award to an individual who has distinguished themselves in music. MfG has also commissioned local luthier, Kuros Torkzadeh, to fashion a cello made from wood grown in east Galway, to be unveiled at the gala.

“We are so excited about our new cello festival, a new adventure for Galway, a new festival for Ireland," said Music for Galway artistic director Finghin Collins. "We are going to make Galway a new destination for excellence in all things cello! We are assembling a cracking programme for our inaugural festival and I can’t wait to share details with you."

Tickets are €100 and corporate packages are available. For more information contact Music for Galway ([email protected], 091 - 705962 ).
