Connacht Rugby players have received a huge confidence boost and some rare silverware with their success at the Churchill Cup Tournament in America.
John Muldoon, who was the Ireland A side’s tour captain, was one of six Connacht players involved in the tournament. Hooker Sean Cronin and centre Keith Matthews, who both were with Muldoon on the Irish senior tour, were in the starting line-up for Sunday’s decider against the English Saxons in which Ireland posted a 49 - 22 win to claim the Churchill Cup for the first time.

•The female-dominated crew of Joie de Vie enjoyed victory in the second race of the Galway Bay Sailing Club’s Storm Technology Series in exhilarating conditions of up to 30 knot winds. First to the windward mark, using a small headsail. Joie de Bie stayed ahead of Henry and Marina Lupton’s new boat Beoga on the run to Leverets and continued to lead until close to the end when Optique overtook. However her keel lifted on the last gybe and the crew had to drop the kite, thus ceding the lead to Joie again, who maintained it to the finish, claiming first on both Echo and IRC handicap. Now What claimed second on Echo with Optique on IRC. Despite tearing their spinnaker with a Chinese gybe near the end of the race Beoga still limped home third over the line. In Class 2 the win went to RhoCoDar who sailed a good tactical race given the conditions. Addict took second with Thataway taking third.

Stephen Healy went on to win the title on the third tie hole. They were followed on the scoresheet by Thomas O’Connor (Scr Athlone GC ) 148, Damien Coyne (1 Galway GC), and Mark Rowe (2 Athlone GC ). Iarnród Éireann will run a special train for Saturday’s Leinster hurling semi-final at Tullamore, departing Galway at 4.05pm, serving Athenry at 4.15pm, Woodlawn at 4.30pm, and Ballinasloe at 4.45pm, arriving in Tullamore at 5.30pm. The return train departs Tullamore Station at 9.15pm.
