Oughterard, Loughrea, and Galway golf clubs were the winners in the provincial finals of the Bulmers cups and shields. Oughterard Golf Club beat Strandhill Golf Club 4/1 in a dramatic final of the Junior Cup held in their home club at the weekend. Loughrea Golf Club beat Galway Bay Golf Club 3/2 in the Pierce Purcell Cup, while Galway Golf Club beat Athlone Golf Club by six holes in the Barton Shield and Co Sligo Golf Club 3/2 in the final of the Senior Cup.

In camogie, Galway face Derry in Ballinasloe (2pm) on Saturday in the Gala Intermediate Championship, while in hurling the Galway intermediate hurlers play Cork in the All-Ireland semi-final at 5pm in Portlaoise.

For the second week running Ballindine’s young riding sensation Eric Glynn stole the headlines by winning the Claregalway McDonald’s Drive Thru Grand Prix on Sunday in superb style.
Glynn was riding Retiro Van W — which he jumped to sixth in a National Grand Prix event in Limerick last week — on Sunday and having secured a place with 18 others in the jump-off from a starting field of 56, he set about a clear round determined to shave as much as possible off the clock in the process.

For nearly an hour everything was going to plan, but it all unravelled in the crucial last 13 minutes. Six points ahead Galway were motoring well, Waterford were in deep bother, and the signs suggested that the maroons would close the deal for the third week in succession.
Waterford, though, ploughed on defiantly. Dan Shanahan was summoned from the bench, and announced his arrival with an early fetch under pressure. Shanahan dragged his shot wide, but he remained cool, and gathered a few more aerial deliveries which ultimately ensured it was Waterford who prevailed.
