Galway’s Whitney Huish claimed the official IKF All Ireland Ladies’ Bantamweight Kickboxing crown on Saturday night in Thurles.
In one of the headline fights, Huish, from the Black Dragon Gym overcame Joleen Riley from the home town. In an intense battle which went the full championship distance, Huish took the crown with a unanimous judges’ decision.

Maree, already off to a respectable 2-2 start in their first ever Men’s National League campaign, knocked out 2008 winners UCD-Marian in their first round National Cup encounter in Oranmore on Saturday November 14th. It was a tough, physical game, in which UCD-Marian incurred several technical fouls, and Maree struggled to find their form, before pulling away for a 69 – 56 win. An encouraging aspect of the Oranmore-Maree outfit’s victory was that 5 players finished with 10 points or more, the kind of spread of scoring that they and their coaches have been looking for.

An excellent display by outhalf David Smith helped Old Wesley to a well deserved victory over Corinthians at Donnybrook.The home side were on top from the off. After seven minutes Wesley went in for an easy try, with the visitors back line at sixes and sevens the home side fullback Brian Doherty touched down in the corner. Smith converted same.

A well fought battle between the two provinces took place last Saturday in the Sportsground, when Munster came away with the 22-0 victory. Connacht started out by conceding a penalty in the first four minutes in the game, with Niamh Briggs putting three points on the board for Munster. Within 10 minutes of this score, they also managed to score in the corner, with some poor defence by Connacht. The Connacht side managed to keep the score line of 8-0 up to half time with some great defence work by Clare Molloy, Carol Staunton, Clare Raferty and Allison Miller. Connacht were unlucky not to score a try before half time with severe pressure put on Munster’s defense.

•Anthony Testa of West Coast Wheelers had a storming ride in the second round of the Kearney Cycles Connacht Mountain Bike League in Westport on Sunday when he rode to victory in the Experts’ class, beating Connacht champion Padraig Marrey (Western Lakes CC) into second place. The race was over five rounds and Testa was well ahead after three but then was passed by Marrey when his chain broke. Amazingly he sorted out the chain, set off in pursuit, and was first to cross the line two laps later, aided by Marrey having his own mechanical problems. The next round is in Derroura, outside Oughterard, on November 22.

Special trains will be running from Dublin to Galway for the upcoming soccer and rugby internationals.
The return soccer special on Saturday November 14 for the Ireland v France match will depart Dublin Heuston at 23.15hrs (11.15pm) and the return rugby special on Sunday November 14 for the Ireland v Australia match will depart Dublin Heuston at 19.15hrs (7.15pm). These trains will also serve Athenry and Ballinasloe Stations. Customers can travel to Dublin on any of the regular trains.
