At times it was sparkling, others nerve wracking but at the end of the day it was just brilliant as Galway ended a 29-year wait to bring the Liam McCarthy Cup west of the Shannon for the fifth time. Three minutes in looked like they might do it the easy way, hitting Waterford for three points in the opening 180 seconds, but once Kevin Moran got in behind the Galway defence and drove the ball low past Colm Callanan in the Galway goal to kick life into what looked like a startled Waterford, it was game on.

It might have been the undercard, but the minor final was entertaining and as brilliant for Galway as the latest crop of minors came up trumps against the odds, with a brilliant fearless display of hurling in Croke Park. It couldn’t have started worse for them with Brian Turnbull finishing the ball to the back of the net inside the opening 15 seconds of the game and the same man slotting over a pointed free two minutes later to leave Galway four points down and under serious pressure.

A quarter of a century has passed since Micheál Donoghue was an All Ireland minor winner with Galway, playing in the half-back line of a team that saw off Waterford by 1-13 to 2-4 - also part of that team was Galway coach Francis Forde.
