Mitchels come out on top in red-top battle

It's not to often that you see a team come out for the second half of a game in different coloured jerseys from the ones the started the contest in, but that's what happened in MacHale Park on Sunday afternoon. Both Castlebar Mitchels and Garrymore were allowed to start the county semi-final in their home red jerseys, despite the only defining difference between the strips, being the yellow piping on the county towns shirts.

• Galway County badminton team enjoyed a famous win in the All Ireland inter-county finals at NUIG sports centre. Having advanced from the qualifying weekend, Galway faced Roscommon in what proved a tight All-Ireland semi final. Early nerves and a couple of tight set losses saw the team trail Roscommon 3-2 in the best of nine, but a great win in the first ladies’ doubles saw Galway draw 3-3. Galway won two of the three mixed games to squeeze through to the All Ireland final 5-3. Up against Meath, Galway got off to a flying start, winning both singles to take a 2-0 lead. Second ladies and second men soon followed to leave Galway in a strong 4-0 lead. It was left to Galway's first doubles pairing of Ross Creaven and Colm Franks to clinch the deciding match to give Galway an unbeatable 5-0 lead and the Class 4 All-Ireland title. A dangerous driver, who was fined and disqualified from driving for 12 months this week, was not aware that a concerned citizen had videotaped him “drifting” around a roundabout, the Galway District Court heard.
