Conway-Walsh condemns closure of Belmullet beds

Confirmation by the HSE of the closure of 19 beds in Belmullet Hospital this week and the deafening silence of our Government TDs and our Taoiseach is devastating for the people of Erris and the surrounding areas, according to Sinn Féin councillor Rose Conway-Walsh.

Concerns about the future of Belmullet Community Hospital were again expressed at a meeting of the Hospital Action Group on Monday evening. Spokesperson for the group, Councillor Rose Conway-Walsh said: “Although the hospital is now operating at an increased level of activity, we are still concerned that the full capacity of the hospital is not being fully utilised.”

“The HSE and Fianna Fáil must be honest with the people of Erris regarding the future of Belmullet Hospital,” according to Sinn Fein councillor Rose Conway-Walsh. “I categorically refute the claim by the HSE that Belmullet Hospital is not in crisis. Plans to close a significant number of the 40 beds in the hospital and failure to provide adequate staff to run the hospital to its full capacity is a crisis. While the whole hospital will not be closing at this time surely a downgrading of services will make it easier to close in the future,” she added.
