Long serving Sinn Féin activist Joe McHale, has been selected by the party to fill a vacancy on Mayo County Council.
McHale will be co-opted onto the council to fill the seat left vacant by Terése Ruane who announced late last year she would be stepping down from her position as a councillor.
Ruane who had served as a member of Castlebar Town Council and laterly Mayo County Council said she was stepping away from her position as a councillor due to work commitments.
The Castlebar resident beat out the challenge of Donna Hyland to fill the seat at a selection convention which took place last weekend, he will be co-opted onto the council at its next meeting later this month.
