St Gerald’s College, Castlebar’s, quest for a three in a row in Connacht Post Primary School’s Senior A Football Championship came to an end in Bekan on Saturday. The Castlebar school lost out to Roscommon CBS in a weather affected semifinal that saw St Gerald’s not register a single score in the first half and the victors snatching the win with a goal right at the death, which was their only score in the second half. St Gerald’s went in trailing by 1-3 to 0-0 at the turnaround, with Roscommon CBS’s county u21 man Noel Gately grabbing their first goal early in the opening half.
After the turnaround St Gerald’s began to grind out what looked like a winning run, where they kicked seven points without reply to go into a single point lead as the clock ticked down. Matthew Ruane and Jarlath O’Malley kicked two points each, with Calum Kyne chipping in with one. Sub James McGinty kicked two great scores not long after coming on and it looked like they had done enough. But with just seconds remaining, Daniel Foley hit a shot for a equalising point, but his effort came back off the post. The quick thinking Foley followed the ball in and won the rebound and fired it past Cian Mitchell to steal the win at the death.
Our Lady’s claim C title
Belmullet school Our Lady’s picked up the Connacht Post Primary Schools C title with a four point win over Colaiste Iognáid in Kiltimagh last Saturday. The Belmullet outfit trailed by 0-6 to 0-0 at the turnaround after they played into the stiff elements in the opening 30 minutes. Aaron Healy grabbed the north Mayo men’s first goal mid-way through the second half, and two points from Justin Healy sent the game into extra-time. The vital score in overtime came from Eoin McGrath who bagged his side’s second goal to seal the win and send last years All Ireland D champions into this year’s C semifinal on Saturday week against Leinster champions Ard Scoil Rath Iomghain or Confey College who were due to meet in the Leinster final yesterday evening.
Sancta Maria goal glut wins D title
There were celebrations in Louisburgh last weekend when the boys from Sancta Maria claimed the Connacht Post Primary Schools Senior D championship title. The south Mayo side had four points to spare over Drumshambo Vocational School after a 3-3 to 0-8 win. A Pearce O’Malley point gave Sancta Maria the lead late on, before their third goal from the boot of Oisin Lally sealed the win to book their place in the All Ireland semifinal against Ballymahon Vocational School after their win over St Paul’s Raheny last weekend in Dunganny.
Davitt girls in All Ireland semi-final action
The ladies senior footballers from Davitt College will go in search of a place in this year’s All Ireland Ladies Senior Schools C final tomorrow when they take on Ulster champions, Coláiste Oiraill from Monaghan, tomorrow in Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada in Carrick on Shannon at 2pm. The Davitt girls booked their place in the last four with a 4-11 to 1-11 win over Ballinamore Community School last week. If they get over their Monaghan opponents a place in the final against either John the Baptist Community School or Cross and Passion College Kilcullen awaits them.
