On Sunday afternoon in Elvery’s MacHale Park, the Mayo ladies senior football team will face off against their old enemies from south of the border in the Connacht Ladies Senior Football Championship final.
Mayo will go into the game on the back of a decent league campaign that saw them finish in fifth place in the table with four wins from their seven games, but it has been a long time since Mayo last played a competitive game.
Their last outing was in the league back on the first Sunday in April when they defeated Monaghan in Ballina on a score of 0-12 to 0-9. That game was three full months ago now, and Mayo manager Peter Clarke will be hoping that the long lay off will have had no ill effects on his team.
Clarke will be in charge of Mayo for the second year in a row, which is in itself something that has not happened for almost a decade. The Dublin native will be able to call on an experienced core of players like Cora Staunton, Fiona McHale, Claire Egan, Yvonne Byrne, and Martha Carter to backbone his side along with a number of younger players who have been learning the trade from the heavyweight names of ladies football in the county over the last few years.
Clarke’s side will be hoping to try and a stop the likes of Annette Clarke, Sinead Burke, and Emer Flaherty from making an impact in the game on Sunday. The game throws in at 3.30pm in Castlebar.
