It was a big weekend for the Mayo senior football team who opened their National Football League campaign against Kildare in Newbridge. Unfortunately for James Horan’s men they came up one point short, thanks to a last gasp winner from Paddy Brophy (a man with a Newport mother ). Ladies fall short in Cork
The Mayo ladies also opened their National Football League with a trip to Cork on Sunday. They also came up short on the road going down by two points to the All Ireland and league champions. Cora Staunton once against stepped up to the mark for Mayo scoring all of Mayo’s total of 1-8 in Mallow, but it wasn’t enough to help her side take the points.
Hurlers book Kehoe Shield final spot
The Mayo hurlers warmed up for the start of the National Hurling League with a win over DCU in the Kehoe Shield semi-final in Dublin on Sunday with a 2-15 to 0-19 win over the third-level side. Kenny Feeney was to the fore for Mayo scoring eight points over the hour for Mayo with Derek McDonnell and Kieran McDermott grabbing the goals. Mayo will face Queens University in the final of the competition.
Manulla bow out of the Connacht Cup
In soccer, Manulla fell to a single goal defeat to Calary Bohs in the fourth round of the Connacht Cup on Sunday afternoon. The meeting between Ballina Town and Partry was postponed as was Killala’s meeting with Medtronic in the shield competition. Moy Villa fell at the second round of the shield going down 3-1 at home to Colga FC.
This weekend, Westport United will head to Dublin to take on Sheriff YC in the seventh round of the FAI Junior Cup. More on that and all the other soccer news in Friday’s edition.
