Over 65s Friendship Group

Over 65s in Castlebar are invited to join the Over 65s Friendship Group hosted by Castlebar Order of Malta.

Enjoy an afternoon tea-party, make friends, and share Castlebar memories. Order of Malta cadets provide excellent musical entertainment.

The next meeting will take place on Sunday February 24 from 3pm to 5pm in the Castlebar Order of Malta, Pavilion Road, Castlebar.

Connacht Council Pioneer Association

The pioneer association will hold an afternoon of prayer and reflection in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, Knock, on Sunday February 17 commencing at 3pm and concluding with Mass at 5.15pm.

The programme will include Stations of the Cross, rosary, prayer and reflection conducted by Fr Pat Lombard, St Mary's Sligo.

The chief celebrant of Mass will be Canon Joe Delaney, spiritual director of the Connacht Pioneer Association.

All are welcome to attend this event as part of the Year of Faith at Knock Shrine on this the first Sunday of Lent.

Pioneer dinner dance

A pioneer dinner dance will be held in Hiney’s, Upper Deck, Crossmolina, on Friday March 1 at 8.30pm.

Music and dancing to Michael S Togher. Tickets cost €25 each and are available from local pioneer centres in the region.

Family Centre course

A four session programme to help parents of children with additional needs, to support and parent their children, will commence at 7.30pm to 9.30pm on Wednesday February 20 in the Family Centre, Chapel Street, Castlebar.

It will be facilitated by Stephanie Fitzgerald, educational psychologist. For information and booking contact the Family Centre on 094 902 5900.

Ecumenical Service of Remembrance

An Ecumenical Service of Remembrance for Children will take place on Friday February 22 in the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar, starting at 8pm. All are welcome. Further information from the Family Centre, Chapel Street, Castlebar, on 094 902 5900.

Drop in centre in Erris

Halla Naomh Bhreandáin, Eachléim, will open two times a week as a drop in centre/sports hall for the community. The new sports officer in the area will run a series of sporting and social events as Gaeilge.

There are two nights that the hall will be open. Wednesday 7.30pm to 9.30pm for adults, and Fridays from 7.30pm to 9pm for secondary school teenagers. For insurance reasons there will be a membership fee for the year.

Mayo Historical and Archaeological Society

The next lecture in the society’s 2013 lecture series will be held on Wednesday February 20 in the Michael Davitt Room, GMIT Campus, Westport Road, Castlebar, at 8pm sharp.

Guest speaker is Dr Malachy Thompson, retired lecturer in chemistry at GMIT Campus Galway. The title of Dr Thompson’s lecture is Archaeoastronomy in the west of Ireland—this is a study of how people in the past understood the phenomena in the sky, how they used these phenomena, and what role the sky played in their cultures.

25 Card Drive

Cloonlyon Parents Association is running a 25 Card Drive every Friday night at 9pm in the Pastoral Centre, Charlestown. Admission €5.

Covey Spring Fair

A spring fair will take place in Westport on Saturday February 23 in the Wyatt Hotel.

You will find a collection of arts and crafts, artisan foods, award winning jams and chutneys, funky clothes for kids, pre-loved baby apparel and equipment, award winning landscape photography, handmade jewellery, and gift products.

There is free entry and it will be open from 11am to 5pm.

Healthy living talk in Aughagower

Croí and the Croagh Patrick Heritage Trail have teamed up to help you learn about healthy living. Bring your friends to the Westport Country Lodge in Aughagower at 8pm on Thursday February 21 and learn how healthy living can be fun.

Get information about the upcoming Croagh Patrick Heritage Trail Walking Festival (March 22 to 24 ); hear tips from senior Croí physiotherapist on exercise and staying healthy; taste healthy light bites prepared by the Mayo Abbey Cookery School.

There is a cover charge of €5 which can be applied to purchase of the Croí cook book.

Console suicide prevention

Console is a nationwide charity providing a wide range of suicide prevention and bereavement services across Ireland.

Console now provides a free/donation-based suicide bereavement service and prevention counselling on Mondays in the Ballina Family Resource Centre.

Foxford Leisure Centre are holding its next indoor car boot sale on Sunday February 17 from 10am to 3pm.

Operation Transformation fun run

Ballina Fit4 Life is organising an Operation Transformation 5k fun walk/ run. The event will be held on Saturday February 23 at 11am from the Clubhouse, Belleek and is suitable for all ages and fitness abilities.

The event is free but donations for Mayo Roscommon Hospice are welcome.

Parke Arts and Drama

Parke Arts and Drama proudly present The Maiden Aunt, a hilarious three act comedy written by Jimmy Keary. The play follows the hilarious antics of Dan and Mary Murphy as they play host to Mary's convalescing aunt Gertie O'Grady.

It will be staged on Thursday February 28, Friday March 1 and Saturday March 2 at 8.30pm in Parke Community Centre.

Fundraising quiz

A fundraising table quiz is being held in Hanley’s Bar Claremorris on Thursday February 21 at 9.30pm sharp. There is a cash prize of €100 for the winning team.

All proceeds will go to Irish Wheelchair Association who provide services for local people with a physical disability and meet on Wednesday every week in the Curam Centre, Claremorris.

Claremorris Community Radio

Volunteers are sought for Claremorris Community Radio. No previous experience of radio or broadcasting is necessary and full training will be provided to all volunteers.

Parenting course

An evening Common Sense Parenting course in Cúram Family Centre will commence on Wednesday April 17 for six weeks from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. The programme is for parents/guardians of school aged children aged between six and 16 years.

The cost of this programme is €20 (includes book ). You will learn practical skills and effective ways to encourage your children’s positive behaviour and discourage negative behaviour.

Painting exhibition

An exhibition of paintings by Mairead Laher will be on show in Áras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet, for the month of February. These paintings are based on time spent in the west of Ireland, in Achill and on Inis Oirr.

Mayo Community Games

Mayo Community Games cross country and mixed distance relay finals for boys and girls will take place tomorrow February 16 at 11.30am at the sports grounds in Davitt College, Castlebar.

The under 12 race will be 600m while the under 14 race will be 800m. The under 13 cross country race will be run over a 1,200m course.

Entry fee on the day will be €2. All competitors must be under the relevant age on July 31 in the year of competition. Running spikes are not allowed in this competition.

Westport Civic Trust talk

The French are on the sea: French travellers' perspectives on Ireland in the 17th to 19th centuries is the lecture to be given by Dr Jane Conroy on Tuesday February 26 at 8pm at The Atlantic Coast Hotel.

Bord na nOg, Beal an Mhuirthead

The presentation night will be held tomorrow February 16 at 6.30pm in the GAA clubhouse in Tallaght. All players from minors to under eights and parents are invited to attend.

Club registration for all players and members for the 2013 season will take place on Friday March 1 in the clubhouse from 7pm.
