Tomorrow February 1 on TV3 at 8pm, The Holiday Show Ireland sets off for the west to discover the best culture, craic, and adventure that Mayo has to offer. Presenters Ciara Whelan and Jon Slattery bring their ultimate road-trip to Mayo, trying their hand at everything from fishing and archery to spa treatments and wine tasting.
On arrival the presenters check-in at Mount Falcon, a four star luxury hotel on the bank of the River Moy, where Ciara gets ready to enjoy a relaxing day in the spa. While Ciara is pampered, Jon takes look at Major Aldrige’s diaries from the 1930s, which chronicles Mount Falcon’s history, first as a private residence and then as one of Ireland’s premier fishing and hunting houses.
Ciara and Jon make the most of the scenery in north Mayo with trout fishing on Mount Falcon Estate lake. Becoming Robin Hood for an hour Jon puts bow to arrow, while Ciara goes clay pigeon shooting and then it is off for a boat trip on the estuary on the River Foy.
Making the most of the water activities in Mayo, Ciara and Jon join the team of Moy Canoe Club to try kayak polo at Schoolhouse Bay. The impressive landscape, dramatic cliffs, and natural bog land of Ceide Fields is a must-stop when visiting Mayo in good weather, but if the sunshine turns to rain, Ciara and Jon recommend a trip to Foxford Woollen Mill Shopping Centre or Tom Hennigan’s Heritage Centre.
Definite Ryder Cup team hopefuls, Ciara and Jon take up their irons for a golf lesson on the driving range and when in this part of the country, Ciara and Jon recommend Carne Golf Links in Belmullet, Enniscrone Golf Club, or the Co Sligo Golf Club at Rosses Point.
After a round of golf, Ciara unwinds with a seaweed bath at Killcullens in Enniscrone Co Sligo and then it is time to enjoy a delicious dinner, complete with wine tasting, at Mount Falcon. The final pit-stop in Mayo is on the River Moy, as Ciara and Jon try to catch their lunch before heading off on the next adventure.
