Ballina Athletic Club is this year hosting the 2011 C & C Cellular/Vodafone Mayo Athletic Awards which will be held at a gala function in the Downhill Hotel, Ballina on Sunday next February 26. Athletes from all over Mayo will be honoured for their contribution to athletics during the past year. Certificates or awards will be presented to all athletes who won national medals in 2011. Another person to be honoured on the night is Ernie Deacy who will be presented with the Hall of Fame Award for 2011.
Byrne competes in 50k national championship
The Irish 50k Championships take place tomorrow (Saturday ) at Donadea in Kildare. John Byrne (Mayo AC ) will be competing and it looks like being a great race with his Irish ultra team-mates. He has recent good form with a 2.33 marathon in 2011 and a fast 25.46 last month in the Raheny 5. He finished 17th in the World Trophy 50k race in Galway (August 2010 ) in 3.19.00.
National 30K Walk Championships
The National 30k Walk championships takes place at Claremorris Athletic Track on Sunday February 19 at 11am. Rob Heffernan, triple Olympian; Jamie Costin, former Olympian; and Connacht’s own Colin Griffin, Ballinamore, who was a holder of the National 50k walk record will be competing. There will be a number of juvenile races with all the top Mayo athletes competing.
