Over recent years the way we work has changed dramatically. More of us now work remotely, or have a hybrid mix of work, while others have now returned to the office.
With all these changes, it is more important than ever for the public to get accurate and up-to-date information on their employment rights and entitlements.
In response to these changes, South Connacht Citizens Information Service (SCCIS ), in conjunction with National University of Ireland Galway School of Law, is delivering two on-line information events titled Employment Rights Explained.
Each session will last approximately an hour and a half and will cover the following topics:
(1 ) Employment Rights and Conditions – Wednesday, May 11 at 7pm – covering topics such as contracts of employment, part time workers’ rights, sick pay, the right to work from home/remotely, payment of wages and minimum wage, leave entitlements and rest periods.
(2 ) Equality in the Workplace, Disputes and Complaints – Wednesday, May 18 at 7pm – covering topics such as maternity leave, adoptive, carers leave etc; bullying and harassment, termination of employment, redundancy, and unfair dismissal; grievance and disciplinary procedures, the Workplace Relations Commission and Labour Court.
The two live information events will be presented by Dr Lucy Ann Buckley, Associate Professor with NUI Galway School of Law, who specialises in employment and equality law.
Dr Buckley said: "It is vitally important that people know their employment rights, but these can often seem complicated. The law is also constantly changing, with important new developments in relation to issues like sick pay, parental rights and remote working. I am delighted to work with South Connacht CIS to help explain key basic entitlements to members of the public."
Diarmaid O’Sullivan, Regional Manager, SCCIS said: "Last year, 4,570 people contacted our service in relation to employment issues. These queries varied from leave and holidays, hours of work, contracts of employment, payment of wages, to unfair dismissal. We strongly urge all workers to keep informed of their employment rights. These two events are free and will benefit both employees, employers and those who are about to start their working lives."
Tomás Lally, Development Manager, Mayo CIS added: "As well as information and advice, SCCIS also provides advocacy support to the public. We support, and where necessary represent clients bringing a complaint and seeking redress through the Workplace Relation Commission (WRC ) in matters such as unpaid annual leave or wages, failure to give minimum notice, failure to pay statutory redundancy and unfair dismissals."
