Super and Premier Cups back on the agenda

Soccer: Mayo League

The build-up to the return to league action continues in the Mayo League this weekend as the action moves back to the Super and Premier Cups, after a weekend of games in the divisional cup competitions last weekend.

The action in the Super Cup has moved to the quarter-final stage for this weekend and the first game to kick off in this round of games takes place on Saturday evening, when Westport United travel to Ballyglass.

The visitors put three past Ballyhaunis Town in the last round but had last weekend off from action, with their game in the Westaro Cup against the same opposition not going ahead; meanwhile, Ballyglass were beaten 2-0 at home by Manulla in Michael Keaveney Park.

On Sunday, Manulla, fresh from that victory over Ballyglass thanks to goals from Aiden Dunleavy and Andrew Shally, will be at home to Claremorris in the Super Cup last eight. Claremorris put eight past Swinford in the Westaro Cup in a 8-1 win on the road in James McEvaddy Park, with Simon Butler hitting a hat-trick - two of them coming from the penalty spot and the other goals coming from Jack Ronayne, Oisin Brady, Mark Maloney, Dean Roddy and David Kerr.

Swinford, who will be hoping to put that defeat behind them, will be at home again this weekend when Castlebar Celtic are the visitors to James McEvaddy Park. The host's sole goal last weekend came from Joe Slevin long after the result had been decided and they'll be hoping to get back on the bandwagon this weekend when the Hoops' come calling. Celtic, for their part, were pipped right at the death last weekend by Ballyheane at the end of extra time in the Westaro Cup in Celtic Park.

Michael Fahy gave Ballyheane the lead with 20 minutes to go in the game, but Celtic were back on level terms minutes later as Ioseph O’Reilly netted to send the game into extra time. As they looked to be heading to spot kicks to decide it, up popped Alan McHale to net the winners for Ashley Stevenson's side.

The 'Hane will be looking to bring that good form into this weekends Super Cup quarter final where they'll be facing the sole Premier Division side left in the competition, Iorras Aontaithe, in Quigley Park at 2.30pm. The north Mayo men will have been in action last night, (Thursday, July 8 after this paper had gone to print ), in their Tuohy Cup clash against Manulla B, the same side they beat 6-2 in the previous round of the Super Cup when the goals came from Justin Healy and Nathan Reilly who both bagged a brace along with finishes from Patrick Sweeney and Ryan Ruddy.
