If you enjoyed the recent RTÉ TV series National Treasures with John Creedon, then be sure to come along and meet some of the experts from the show this summer at the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life, Turlough Park, Castlebar.
Four of the National Treasures curators will be speaking over two days, on July 28 and August 18, about the unique project which inspired thousands of people to dig out their treasured objects, memorabilia and keepsakes relating to Ireland’s social history over the last 100 years.
Altogether, more than 5,000 objects were submitted online and at a series of public roadshows and National Treasures followed a team of curators as they assessed a fascinating range of ordinary little objects with big stories. They eventually selected 72 winning items which are on display now at the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life.
The National Treasures lecture series will feature UCD lecturer and historian Dr Richard McElligott speaking from 2pm to 3pm on Saturday, July 28, on Uncovering the Ordinary Experience of Extraordinary Times; and social historian Roisín Higgins speaking about The Emotions and Rhythms of Irish Life from 3.30pm to 4.30pm on the same day.
On Saturday, August 18, there are two further talks in the series, with design historian Linda King discussing ‘Designed Objects as Social History’ from 2pm to 3pm and fashion historian Ruth Griffin speaking from 3.30pm to 4.30pm on the unique insights revealed by fashion objects and fashion history.
