Hurling star Derek Lyng retires

Derek Lyng has announced his retirement from inter-county hurling after a decade of hurling for Kilkenny.

"There is never an ideal time to do something like this, but the time is right for me now," said the 32-year-old. "I've had a great innings. I played with and against some of the greatest hurlers who ever lived and I picked up a few honours along the way."

The Emeralds (Urlingford ) player joined the senior squad in 2001. He went on to win six senior All-Irelands, four National Leagues, four Railway Cups, nine Leinster championships, and two All Star awards, in 2002 and 2003.

"Playing with Kilkenny always meant a huge amount to me," he added. "I always had massive pride in it and I never took anything for granted." Lyng confirmed that he will continue to play with his club team the Emeralds.
