Local historian puts folk museum online

A local man has recognised the need to keep promoting the heritage of Kilkenny and as a result has set up a website where surfers can view and read about his collection of more than 10,000 exhibits.

Curator of the Nore View Folk Museum in Bennettsbridge, Seamus Lawlor - a man who has done more than most to promote his county’s envied history and antiquities - recently decided to avail of the mighty internet to tell the world about a folk museum that, as thousands of charmed visitors have already attested, is one of the finest of its kind in the world.

The exhibits include everything from ancient farm tools to threshing engines, parish pumps at which politicians gave speeches, some of the first ever babies’ prams, relics of the Land War and the Great Famine, and military memorabilia.

There are excellent pictures of some of the best-loved and historically more significant exhibits, such as a replica of the Banner of the Confederation of Kilkenny and a two-year-old Saint Fiacra carriage, and information on other display features.

The website also tells of a colourful time capsule of our county’s rich and multi-faceted heritage, all credit goes to this local Bennetsbridge history enthusiast.
