PHYSIOGNOMY, A solo portrait exhibition by the Galway artist and graphic designer Michelle Campion is currently on show at the Renzo Café, Eyre Street.
Physiognomy is the practice of judging character from facial features, an idea which dates back to Ancient Greece. The belief continued into the 19th century with Charles Dickens, Oscar Wilde, and Charlotte Brontë making character descriptions based on facial features. Although physiognomy is a pseudoscience, people often still ‘judge a book by its cover’. For this exhibition, Michelle highlights the mystery of facial features/ expression and how nothing can be truly inferred from it.
There will be an official opening of the exhibition this Saturday at 7.30pm. The exhibition runs until November 30.
