Big O Taxis and Students Unions will ensure students ‘Don’t Walk Home Alone’

BIG O TAXIS have joined forces with the Students Unions in GMIT in a bid to ensure the safety of students going home late at night. This campaign is called “Don’t Walk Home Alone” and is aimed to deter students from walking home alone after a night out where they find that they have neglected to budget for their taxi.

They will go to one of the Big O offices (Domnick St or Eyre Sq – beside the Meyrick Hotel ) or hail one of the many Big O taxis operating throughout the city. They will hand over their students union card to the driver who will then bring them home safely.

The cards will then be given to the student rep responsible who in turn will collect the fare and pay Big O for the run. This campaign is widely supported by local representatives. The Mayor of Galway, Cllr Donal Lyons said he is fully supportive of this initiative and would like to compliment Big O taxis and the students union at GMIT for coming up with this solution to the problem of young people walking home alone late at night. Derek Nolan TD has welcomed this campaign and said “Well done to all concerned”

BIG O have informed us that as well as implementing the “Don’t Walk Home Alone” campaign they have also introduced discounted set fares for the student population in both GMIT and NUIG. Also in their office in Eyre Sq (beside The Meyrick Hotel ) they are offering half price on their left luggage rates to students. These discounted fares will be posted around both campuses in the coming weeks.
