Beth Nielsen Chapman - the Essential Songs Playlist

BETH NIELSEN Chapman, the twice Grammy-nominated Nashville singer-songwriter, is a woman of many talents, commitments, and achievements.

The Texan has written songs for Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Bette Midler, Trisha Yearwood, Michael McDonald, Amy Grant, Keb Mo’, Roberta Flack, and Faith Hill.

She is also a breast cancer survivor; an environmental activist; and a teacher  and lecturer on creativity (she has taught at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama, the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, and the Berklee School of Music, Boston ).

As well as writing songs for others, Beth is a hugely respected and successful solo artist. Her new album Uncovered features collaborations with Kim Carnes, Duane Eddy, Amy Grant, and Gretchen Peters, and she plays’ Galway’s Black Box Theatre on Thursday September 25 at 8pm. In advance of the concert, we present a playlist of five of Beth’s finest songs.

Simple Things

The forthcoming single, and opening track of Uncovered.

Every December Sky

From 2002, this song features sometime Galway resident John Prine on backing vocals.

Sand and Water

From the 1997 album of the same name, ‘Sand and Water’ was written about Ernest Chapman, Beth’s late husband, who died of cancer in 1994.

This Kiss

Faith Hill had a big hit with this in 1999, but it was Beth who wrote it and here she is performing it with Olivia Newton John.

All I Have

One of Beth’s earliest singles, this reached No 12 in the American charts in 1991.
