Galway senior ladies will open their Tesco Homegrown National Football League against Down in Tuam on Sunday (2pm ).
This round-two clash comes after Galway’s opening game in division two away to Kildare was postponed due to an unplayable pitch.
Sunday’s fixture will be a litmus test for Galway’s preparations which started earlier than last season when they reached the league final for a second successive year.
Having lost out to Mayo two seasons ago, and then to Kerry last season in the final, manager Barry Downey will be looking for silverware this year.
However opponents Down are already a game ahead, having edged Meath by 1-12 to 2-8 last weekend.
As a result manager Barry Downey can expect a tough test from the visitors and will be looking to his experienced players, led again this year by captain Sinead Burke.
Barry Downey, along with his selectors Dave Mullaly, Martina Cummins and Kevin Reidy, were ratified to take charge of the senior and u-21 teams at the recent ladies’ annual general meeting.
Daniel Moynihan, Nioclas McDonnacha and Katie Breathnach are in charge of the minors, while Gary Donnellan once again takes charge of the u-16s along with Stephen Hession, Kieran Lyons and Aoife Monaghan. Con Moynihan and Caitriona Kyne will manage the u-14s.
