Funding of €10,000 for CCTV cameras in Walter Macken, Suan, and Whitehall

CCTV camera systems are to be installed in Walter Macken Place in Mervue and Suan apartments in Sandyvale, Headford Road, while the existing camera in Whitehall in the city centre is to be upgraded following the provision of €10,000 in the Galway City Council’s 2014 Budget.

Independent city councillor Terry O’Flaherty confirmed that following her representations the funding has been included in the budget. The allocation was made at a special meeting of Galway City Council last Friday held to amend and adopt next year’s budget.

“This came about as a result of representations made to me some time ago as all of these complexes are inhabited mainly by the elderly.

“The money provided is €4,000 each towards a single camera for the commission and installation in Walter Macken Place and Suan apartments. €2,000 will go towards the upgrading of the existing camera currently in Whitehall,” said Cllr Flaherty, who added that the installation of CCTV cameras will be welcomed by all the residents as it will provide increased safety, particularly for the elderly, in all of these apartment blocks.
