The biggest provider of hostels for the homeless, and assistance to those in need, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, is urging Galwegians to support this year’s annual appeal.
Launched this week, the “We can’t do it alone” appeal, will include door-to-door and church gate collections, in addition to music and craft fundraisers.
The society’s area president Michael McCann says the SVP spends more than €1m on direct assistance to people in need just in Galway.
“This money goes to helping families, children, those living alone, young and old with food, energy and education costs.”
The society is witnessing an increasing number of people seeking help who are new to need, he says, and they are facing personal, financial or emotional crisis in isolation and feeling terribly alone.
“But we ask these people to remember that they are not alone,” he says. “ Between now and Christmas SVP volunteers will be visiting homes and supporting families in a variety of ways.”
Mr McCann says the money raised in Galway is used locally and the annual appeal will support its work which is dedicated to helping the most vulnerable in our society.
“This means not only providing practical support, but encouraging self-sufficiency and campaigning for social justice.”
Galwegians can help SVP in a variety of ways. In addition to monetary contributions, donations of toys can be made through the 2fm Toy Appeal or by arranging a Giving Tree in a local school or workplace. Money, toys and food can also be donated at Ozanam House, St Augustine’s Street, Galway.
