Former IRA hunger striker to speak in Galway

Tommy McKearney, who took part in the first IRA H Block hunger strike in 1980, spending 53 days on the fast for political status, will address a public meeting in Galway.

Mr McKearney will address the Peadar O’Donnell Socialist Republican Forum on Wednesday November 6 at 8pm in Richardsons, Eyre Square.

He was an IRA volunteer in the 1970s and 1980s and has since authored a book The Provisional IRA: From Insurrection to parliament. He is the northern area representative of the Independent Workers’ Union and is actively involved in promoting the Peadar O’Donnell Socialist Republican Forum.

The meeting will be chaired by socialist republican and independent Galway county councillor Seosamh Ó Cuaig. Eugene McCartan of the Communist Party of Ireland will also address the meeting. There will also be the launch of Undoing the conquest … Renewing the Struggle, a collection of seminar papers delivered over a period of several months to the forum covering socialist republicanism in Ireland, the nature of the State, role of class in modern Ireland, and imperialism in the present era.

All are welcome to the meeting.
