MICHAEL WINSLOW, a stalwart of the Police Academy films, a voice on Robot Chicken, and a man whose vocal chords can create any sound imaginable, is coming to Galway.
Michael Winslow will play the Róisín Dubh on Saturday February 18 at 8.30pm. He is a master of vocal gymnastics and can imitate more than 1,000 sound effects using his voice alone - be it recreating the frenzy of Jimi Hendrix guitar solo, the roar of a jet plane, barking dogs, scratches from a chalkboard, radio noises, cell phones, etc.
His love of mimicry, imitation, and re-creation of sounds comes from his upbringing on Fairchild Airforce Base in Washington State. As a child he passed the time imitating the noises of the aeroplanes and jet engines he heard around him.
“Growing up in the Air Force Base made it difficult to have friends,” he says, “so I created imaginary friends, dogs, cats, trucks, anything that would keep me occupied for the moment.”
His first foray into comedy and performance came at a show in Boulder, Colorado, where he was opening for an Italian rock/fusion band Nova. He heard they were Hendrix fans so he hit upon the idea of doing a Hendrix impersonation for his act.
His rendition of ‘Purple Haze’ earned him an ecstatic response from the audience, cementing Michael’s desire to be an entertainer.
Since the 1980s Michael has been best known for his film and television work. He has appeared in the Police Academy films, Mel Brooks’ Spaceballs, and Gremlins, and has provided voices on Robot Chicken and Family Guy.
