A 24-year-old student who was extremely abusive to gardai calling them “pigs” and other offensive remarks was fined €500 and warned to behave himself in future.
Thomas Parrott with a rental address of 102 Lurgan Park, Renmore, appeared before Judge Mary Fahy at Galway District Court on Monday where he pleaded guilty to refusing to give a name and address and threatening and abusive behaviour at Eglinton Street on December 14, 2011.
Inspector Mick Dwyer told the court that at 12.12am a male was observed on the street in a highly intoxicated state and as the gardai passed he was shouting: “Pigs go home.” Parrott continued to shoot his mouth off telling the garda officers to “fuck off” and when asked to furnish his name and address he replied “guess”. The court further heard how Parrott has five previous convictions, however none of these was for public order offences.
Defence solicitor John Martyn explained that his client, who is single, had been made unemployed some time back and is now a mature student at GMIT. Mr Martyn added that Parrott failed to appear at a previous court sitting on January 4 this year because he was sitting exams.
“Your behaviour was absolutely disgraceful,” said Judge Fahy to which the defendant replied: “I’m really sorry, I can’t remember [the incident]”.
“He is on a very sticky wicket. If you continue to behave in this manner your exams will be the last of your worries,” warned Judge Fahy before convicting Parrott and fining him a total of €500 with three months to pay.
