A Leaving Cert student who tragically lost her life when her vehicle collided with another in Portumna on Bank Holiday Monday is to be laid to rest today.
Seventeen-year-old Claire Prendergast from Dangan, Golden, in Tipperary, had been the front seat passenger in a Nissan Micra car, which also contained two other female occupants, when it collided with a Mercedes-Benz at Thornfield, Portumna, at around 11.25am on October 31 last.
While Miss Prendergast was pronounced dead at the scene, her two friends who had been travelling with her received serious injuries and were taken to University Hospital Galway for treatment; one of the teenagers was transfered to the Mater Hospital in Dublin and her condition was described as serious.
Three generations of the one family had been travelling in the Mercedes-Benz, which had been travelling in the opposite direction; these four occupants - a 71-year-old grandfather, his 38-year-old son, and two children aged two and five - were taken to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe for treatment for injuries described as non life threatening.
Ms Prendergast, a student at Cashel Community School, is survived by her parents Dick and Chris, and her brother Michael. Requiem Mass is to take place today in the Church of the Blessed Sacrament in Golden, Tipperary, followed by burial in Dangan Cemetery.
Meanwhile, the 52-year-old Ballybane man killed in a single vehicle road traffic accident last Friday was laid to rest at Lisheen Cemetery in Ballybrit on Monday.
The life of Chris O’Meara of Glen Avon Drive, Ballybane, was tragically ended soon after his car collided with a wall at a location on the N17 Galway to Tuam Road at 9.30am on October 28. He was taken to University Hospital Galway where he was pronouced dead.
