A man has been charged with 14 counts of rape which took place over a prolonged period at two locations in the city more than 25 years ago.
The 49-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is charged with six counts of raping a female at one location in a city housing estate on various dates between February 4 1985, and June 30 1986, and eight further counts of raping the same female at a second location on December 17 1984 and on various dates between July 1 1983 and February 2 1985, contrary to Section 48 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861 and Section 2 of the Criminal Law (Rape ) Act 1981.
Garda Maria Freeley gave evidence of charging the accused man with the 14 offences on June 29 last and said that he gave no reply when they were put to him.
Inspector Mick Coppinger told Judge Aeneas McCarthy that a file had been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions who directed trial by indictment on the matter. The court then heard that the accused has already been granted station bail.
Judge McCarthy remanded the man on continuing bail to appear again at Galway District Court on September 21 with conditions that the man surrenders his passport and signs on twice a week at Galway Garda Station. Legal aid was also granted.
