The Language Institute at the Granary Learning Centre has launched its packed spring and summer language programme for adults, and a special programme for teenagers. The ever popular practical Spanish courses will run throughout the spring and summer with a new class beginning each month. German classes will also start in the middle of May for beginners and improvers, as will courses in Chinese, Portuguese, and Russian. The Spanish for teens short summer courses begin again in June, and the foreign language teacher training course will be repeated in May and June.
Spanish is by far the most popular language offered at the learning centre. A full adult programme at all levels is offered during the autumn and winter terms. There is also an extensive children’s programme on Saturdays and short day courses for teenagers during the summer. The practical Spanish course remains popular during the summer because of its usefulness for travel in Spain and Latin America. The Spanish for teens course offers first and second years the chance to use their new language in an active and easy-going two week day course.
German has become more and more popular in the last two years. Perhaps this has to do with the health of the German labour market and the number of German companies for which Galway is the Irish base. Recruitment agencies report that workers with German speaking ability are in high demand. The Language Institute is responding to the corresponding interest in German by starting a new beginner class as well as a continuation class in May.
The most exciting new development at the language school is the launching of beginner courses in Chinese. As the economic and political influence of China grows so will interest in its language. The Language Institute has recruited an exceptionally experienced and talented native Chinese teacher and looks forward to introducing Irish learners to the most widely spoken language in world.
