Declan Ganley, the businessman, political campaigner, and founder of Libertas, will be in Galway this evening to launch a new novel based on themes of emigration.
Mr Ganley will launch An Irish-American Dream by Ciarán Ó Coigligh in Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop at 6pm.
Set in 1903, An Irish-American Dream focuses on Sabuline Cavan, a young woman from the west of Ireland who is set afloat on the Atlantic in an oarless currach as a punishment for being pregnant and unmarried. Her perilous journey eventually takes her to New York and comes full circle when Sabuline’s African-American great-grandson returns to the west of Ireland a century later.
Ciarán Ó Coigligh is a professor of language, literature, and civilisation in Saint Patrick’s College, Drumcondra. He is a native of Dublin, but has family connections in east Galway where he spent much time as a child. He is a prolific published author of poems, novels, short stories, articles and reviews.
An Irish-American Dream was previously published in the Irish language and copies are still available. Mr Ó Coigligh has previously taught in the Modern Irish Departments of NUI Galway.
Refreshments will be served and all are welcome.
