A €500,000 re-development of Tuam Golf Club will be officially opened this weekend.
The facelift, which began two years ago, includes five new greens along with several new tees and an extensive bunkering programme, all of which will be unveiled to the public on Sunday afternoon.
Chairman of the club’s course development committee, Ian Pierce, says the reaction to the new development has been “ phenomenal”.
“We are very pleased with the work that was carried out. Every course needs a facelift now and again and we believe that the improvements carried out in Tuam will add to the attractiveness of the course,” he says.
Work began on the project in the autumn of 2007 when major improvements were carried out at four holes on the course, including the provision of one new green on the third hole along with tees and new bunkers on the other three.
The second phase has involved the construction of four additional new greens, the lengthening of some of these holes, and the provision of new tees complexes.
The official opening will be conducted by Eugene Fayne, chairman of the Connacht Branch of the Golfing Union of Ireland, with the Mayor of County Galway, Cllr Tom McHugh.
The club, which celebrated its centenary in 2004, engaged golf course designer Ken Kearney for the project which was carried out by a Wexford-based golf construction company.
