NUIG’s School of Nursing and Midwifery second year students will walk, run, cycle or swim 500km once again in support of local homelessness and housing charity Galway Simon Community.
As part their Community Care module, second year nursing students organise a fundraising initiative for a local community organisation. This year, following participation in Galway Simon’s youth advocacy programme, which aims to increase awareness about homelessness in our community, the NUIG students were inspired to raise funds for families and individuals facing homelessness this Christmas.
Catherine Meagher, lecturer at the NUI Galway School of Nursing and Midwifery, said: “Our student nurses are front line workers and see the impact homelessness has on patients’ health and wellbeing on a daily basis."
Fintan Maher, head of fundraising and communications, at Galway Simon Community added: “At Galway Simon, we recognise the power and ambition of young people to be catalysts for social change. We are deeply grateful to be the chosen charity for this wonderful initiative and we can’t thank the students and lecturer Catherine Meagher enough for all they do. Their motivation to raise funds in support of those facing homelessness in these difficult times is truly inspiring and their compassion will go a long way in their future careers.”
