Mayor calls for patrols to combat boy racers in city

Differing views on impact of boy racers from both Mayor and Superintendent

More Garda patrols are needed to combat boy racers in Galway city, that is according to Mayor of the Galway City, Mike Cubbard.

Mayor Cubbard said the drivers were causing huge problems at the Galway Shopping Centre car park on Headford Road as well as for residents in Bohermore at the city's JPC meeting over Zoom on Monday.

He said; "This weekend just gone there was absolute torment for residents again in the Bohermore area. It is something I have raised a number of times and while there was a big story in Loughrea [about boy racers], nothing seems moving [in city].

In response to the Mayor's comments, Superintendent James Flanagan told the meeting that gardai have been patrolling the car park but have not received many complaints about boy racers.

He also revealed the gardai were in talks to authorities who own the car park to close off the car park at night.
