Claddagh Quay exceeds expectations

You could be excused for thinking that the recession was over last Thursday; such was the crowd at the auction of two Claddagh properties in The Victoria Hotel.

No 3 Claddagh Quay, beside the fire station, was a small, derelict, two bedroom terraced house described by the auctioneer Don Colleran as “a site, but a site in an unrivalled location”. Guiding at €215,000, bidding was very brisk, opening at €200,000 with offers of €5,000 been fired at the auctioneer in rapid succession before the property was sold to a young woman at the front of the room for €275,000 — €60,000 over the guide price.

The auction was full of surprises when No 18 Beattystown, Claddagh, an ex serviceman’s house on a very large elevated site with views of the bay, failed to sell. Now on the market for sale by private treaty for only €450,000, this certainly appears exceptional value when you consider that the last ex-serviceman’s house in the Claddagh sold for €780,000 at auction last year.
