Connaught u15 Cup quarter final

Creggs - 0

Buccaneers -17

Buccaneers u15s produced a good display in defeating Creggs in the quarter-final of the u15 Connacht Cup in Creggs on Saturday last. Buccaneers were without several players through injury but had a very strong squad available, nonetheless.

Creggs are a very big physical team whereas Buccs have by far the faster players but the heavy state of the pitch favoured Creggs’ style of play to a greater extent. Buccs played with a very strong wind in the first half but had great difficulty in obtaining possession in the early stages. They did eventually obtain parity and from one great move James Farrell scored in the corner. But, one felt that they needed another score before half-time and this they obtained with the last play of the half when Saba Meunargia crashed over for his first ever score for Buccaneers.

Creggs never really made the best use of the strong wind in the second half and Buccs were able to play a lot of the match in their opponents half. In fact they got the only score of the half and it was worth waiting for. Buccaneers stole the ball from a Creggs lineout deep inside their own 22 through Niall Carr. The ball was then passed along the backline at speed releasing James Farrell who ran half the length of the pitch for a magnificent team score which Cian Bradley converted. This score sealed the win but the last eight minutes were spent on the Buccs line where heroic defending prevented Creggs from scoring a consolation try.

Bucaneers are now in the semi-final of the cup which is due to be played in Athlone, on the same day as the final, at the start of April. Training continues on Saturday at 10.30am.
