Ten candidates as Roscommon goes to poll in by-election

Ten candidates are on the ballot sheet as the voters of the Roscommon-South Leitrim constituency go to the polls in tomorrow’s (Friday’s ) by-election.

A total of 62,369 people are registered to vote in the by-election, which will elect a TD to fill the vacancy left when Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan was elected to the European Parliament in May.

There is one candidate running from each of the four main parties - Fine Gael, Labour, Fianna Fáil, and Sinn Féin - as well as six Independent candidates. Fine Gael’s Cllr Maura Hopkins is the only female candidate.

The 10 candidates standing for election are Ivan Connaughton (FF ), Emmet Corcoran (Ind ), Tom Crosby (Ind ), Michael Fitzmaurice (Ind ), Des Guckian (Ind ), Maura Hopkins (FG ), John Kelly (Lab ), Martin Kenny (SF ), John McDermott (Ind ), and Gerry O’Boyle (Ind ).

Polling stations across the constituency open at 7am on Friday October 10, and close at 10pm.

A by-election is also taking place in the Dublin South-West constituency tomorrow to replace Fine Gael TD Brian Hayes who was also elected to the European Parliament.
