Community Diary - Ballinasloe

The sun shone down on the Ballinasloe 10K Fun Run/Walk

The community of Ballinasloe was out in force last Sunday April 18 last as the town hosted its second annual Ballinasloe 10K Charity Run/Walk. The fundraising drive was organised by local based charity Stargazer Lily Foundation to raise much-needed funds and awareness for the Irish Cancer Society.

In excess of 350 participants gathered at the Carlton Shearwater Hotel to collect their race numbers and for a safety briefing and were then taken to the starting point where the sun shone down as the race was officially opened by the Ballinasloe Mayor Pat O’Sullivan at noon.

The event toured the local bog and emerged onto the Portumna road and continued through Kellysgrove and Beechlawn, ending the race in Poolboy where participants enjoyed light refreshments. Prizes were awarded back at the Carlton Shearwater Hotel for runners and walkers with the overall winner Wayne Reid completing the run in just over 34 minutes followed closely by Stephen McKeige at 35 minutes, and Niall Kelly in third at 40 minutes.

It was fantastic to see such an outpouring of support from the local community. Annette and the Stargazer team would like to extend a huge thank you to members of the Civil Defence, local Gardai, and all the other volunteers who helped make the event a great success.
