It was about this time of year, May 26, 1910 that the foundation stone of St. Mary’s College was laid. It was not, however the first St Mary’s College. Father John Paul O’Toole, born in Galway in 1804, was one of the last priests ordained during the wardenship. He was based in Paris and Rome but was always conscious of his own difficulty in obtaining a food secondary education in Galway, so he decided to return to Galway in 1843 and open a school here. His main difficulty was finding a premises but happily, he managed to secure “West House”, a detached residence with extensive grounds situated on Helen Street. He bought it from John Lushington Reilly, a great benefactor of the town and neighbourhood, especially during the famine of 1822.

It was a game that had been anticipated for some time. The battle of the top two teams in the JP Flanagan Leinster U20 League with the result having a major bearing on where the league title would go. Corinthians and Dublin University were the teams coming into this battle, and after eighty minutes of sublime rugby from both sides, it was Corinthians who came out on top by just a single point.

Galway Corinthians RFC’s U20 team will look to continue the start of 2024 like they finished 2023 with a win when they host Wanderers in Corinthian Park on Sunday afternoon at 2.30.

Peadar O’Dowd’s credentials for writing about Galway were impeccable. One of four children, Nono, Willie, Martin and Peadar, born to their parents John and Bridget, he grew up in Bohermore and was always grateful for the fact. Buccaneers Touch rugby team made the short trip to St Mary’s College in Galway city on Saturday last to compete in the second round of this year’s DTS and it proved to be a worthwhile journey as they secured a first ever top three finish in the national competition.
